Triple pane, or triple glazed, windows are constructed with three individual layers of glass. While not visible when looking outside, that extra glass greatly improves your window's energy efficiency. Between each pane of glass is a thin pocket of air or gas that acts as an insulator, preventing air from passing in or out. Traditionally, windows have been single pane, but a drive toward reducing the flow of cold winter drafts and improving home energy efficiency has made triples panes an attractive option for replacement windows.
Triple glazed windows are some of the most energy efficient windows available. The more panes of glass in a window, the more energy efficient it will be. Expect a triple pane window to be at least three times as efficient at preventing air flow as a single pane window. A quadruple pane would obviously be even more efficient but is not necessary in most homes.
With triple glazing comes improved energy efficiency, but at a slightly higher cost. The important factor is energy savings. Upgrading from single to triple pane windows saves a large percentage on annual heating and cooling bills. There are also rebates available from federal and state governments as well as some utilities for installing more efficient windows.
Here are what triple pane windows can do for your home:
- Increase insulating power. The key to the insulating power of triple pane windows is stopping heat flow. In cold weather, triple pane windows keep more warmth and energy inside. In warm weather, triple pane windows keep more warmth and energy outside. Triple pane windows have greater insulation abilities than dual pane windows because of the pockets of air or gas between the panes. They are also superior to double pane windows because they provide an additional layer upon which low emittance glazing may be applied. A low emittance coating is a microscopically thin, virtually invisible metal or metallic oxide layer deposited directly on the surface of one or more of the panes of glass. Low emittance glazing reduces heat transfer through your window.
- Enhance condensation resistance. Condensation can come from high humidity levels and/or lack of sufficient air flow in the home and is magnified by windows that do not provide good insulation. The reason why insufficient windows promote condensation is that the surface of the glass gets cooler as heat escapes. Highly insulating windows keep the temperature on the surface of the glass warmer, and thus more resistant to condensing the moisture rich air in the atmosphere of your home.
- Improve sound control. Another great feature of triple pane windows is their ability to block out more noise from the outside world. The additional pane of glass, plus the extra airspace created in the insulated glass unit provide additional barriers to sound transmission.
- Provide comfort and security. Triple pane windows can drastically change the comfort level in your house so it maintains an even ambient temperature throughout and increases your comfort level.
- Save you money. The tremendous insulation qualities of triple pane windows can result in substantial cost savings year after year.
